5 Things To Consider Before Buying The Best Laptops for Dual Booting

1. Check if other people have had luck using Linux on your prospective purchase

A simple Google search like ” (brand) (model) Linux” could yield some results, or you could check out my blog if you want to find a more in-depth review. This will give you an idea of what kind of hardware works with Linux, and also the kinds of problems that people have run into (and how they got around them).

2. Think about what you need it for

Consider whether your laptop is going to be used for general computing like web surfing and document writing, or running more demanding things like video editing and programming. If it’s the former, don’t worry too much about graphics cards; if it’s the latter, make sure there is at least some sort of dedicated card included. Also, consider how powerful the laptop needs to be; do you require just something that can browse the internet while being portable, or can you afford a little extra size and weight for a more powerful processor and graphics card?

3. Think about Linux compatibility

As mentioned previously, dual-booting is not a one-size-fits-all kind of thing. If you want to use your laptop for both Windows and Linux (and possibly more than two different operating systems), then make sure that the hardware you’re buying will work with all of them. Or alternatively, consider whether it’s worth buying more than one laptop; this might be more expensive up front, but it could save money in the long run if you buy several laptops specifically for their different purposes (e.g. one might emphasize storage space while another would provide portability).

4. Make sure the hardware is upgradable

If you need to be able to upgrade your laptop as it gets old, make sure that its internals is removable and replaceable. This might seem obvious, but I’ve known people who have bought laptops assuming that because they’re all pretty much the same these days than any one of them should be upgradable and last a few years. Unfortunately, this isn’t really the case anymore; most laptops don’t allow for upgrades once they’re out of warranty (and even before then), so if you want yours to last more than just a couple of years then try not to leave things like RAM or storage space until there’s only one option left.

5. Think about Linux pre-installed

This is an obvious one, but you might be surprised at how many people I’ve encountered who’ve felt pressured to buy a Windows laptop because they don’t know their other options. Note that this doesn’t mean Linux laptops are unaffordable; you can find out more about this on my blog here.

3 Advantages Of Laptops for Dual Booting

1. The portability factor

This factor is often cited by people who have switched from a laptop to a desktop – they long for the days when they could just pick up their computer and move it anywhere without worrying too much about whether or not it would work after being transported. Many say that the convenience of a mouse and keyboard attached directly to your PC make working more efficient than using peripherals connected via USB ports on a docking station. However, I feel like these arguments are moot because of one simple fact: laptops come with built-in batteries. This means that you can just pick up your laptop and carry it to the place where you wish to set it up, without having to worry about plugging in an external monitor, mouse, or keyboard to get it running. Switching between different operating systems is also considerably easier because of this aspect – even if the hardware differs slightly the overall experience is largely similar.

2. The cost factor

Desktops are typically cheaper than laptops when looking at the same specifications, but laptops give you more bang for your buck when considering their physical size. For example, let’s compare two products from Acer’s Predator line of gaming products: The Acer Predator G3-605 desktop and its corresponding laptop Acer Aspire V 15 Nitro Black Edition.

3) Backup factor: This is one of the primary benefits that laptop users enjoy over their desktop counterparts – laptops are much easier to backup, recover and transfer data from compared to desktops. For example, if you want to replace your hard drive with a solid-state drive (SSD) then all you have to do it remove a single screw, disconnect the old hard drive and connect the SSD using the appropriate connector. To back up your entire system for transferring purposes, all you have to do is copy your data onto an external storage device which can be plugged into any computer with the appropriate port available. If you were using a desktop computer this process might require more time because you would have to either purchase or build yourself an enclosure capable of housing the old hard drive and connecting it to another computer.

The Bottom Line

With so many laptops on the market, it can be hard to find a model that has all of your needs.
