Buying Guide For The Best GPU for Ryzen 3 3700x
1. How much do you want to overclock?
This is probably the most important consideration to take into account when choosing which GPU to buy, especially with the RX Vega cards that have been out recently. The best bang-per-buck card right now is definitely one of the Vega 56 variants from MSI and Sapphire (thanks Reddit user /u/nofansky for summarizing this in a comment). The Vega 56 is not only cheaper, but it overclocks very well out of the box – anywhere from 0 to +175 MHz on the core clock with basically no effort depending on which card you get. This means that if you are thinking about buying an RX Vega 64 instead of a 56, there really is no benefit at all because they perform almost the same when overclocked (the 64 will have better thermals though – as long as your case can handle them). If you want to overclock like crazy and buy water-cooled cards (which won’t be cheap), then by all means go for the Vega 64’s. If you don’t care about overclocking and think the AMD Adrenalin driver suite is enough to get the most out of your graphics card, then any RX Vega 56 variant will do.
2. What resolution are you aiming for?
Now there is a lot of information on this so I’m going to try and summarize it in one sentence: If 1440p is your target resolution then pretty much anything from NVIDIA will do. If you are looking at 4K or above then it’s between AMD or NVIDIA depending on if you are willing to overclock (AMD) or not (NVIDIA).
3. How important is FreeSync/G-Sync?
As far as I understand right now there are only two implications when it comes to choosing FreeSync over G-Sync – no matter which GPU you get.
AMD also released some driver updates that improved FreeSync on RX Vega cards, hopefully, this is something they will continue to work towards (along with CrossFire support). If you are looking at ASUS or Acer monitors then there really isn’t any reason to get G-Sync over FreeSync since their FreeSync models are so cheap – within $50 of the NVIDIA counterparts for most models.
4. Will you be overclocking?
Well if so don’t get a reference model card because even though they come out of the box faster than AIB variants, they actually throttle pretty severely in comparison. A general rule of thumb I see people keeping is that if it’s factory boosted above 1100 MHz then keep it under 90 degrees or else throttle. Also if you are running the Vega 56 cards then make sure your power supply is beefy enough (I recommend an 850W PSU minimum).
5. And most importantly do you trust me? (kidding but not really)
Well, I tried my best to keep this article unbiased, however, there might be some bias towards NVIDIA simply because that’s what I’ve been using since I was still in high school and just getting into PC gaming. This article is meant for people who want to get the most bang for their buck so if you’re looking at maybe GTX 1080 Ti or Titan Xp then these five things won’t apply as much to you. 3 Benefits Of GPU for Ryzen 3 3700x
1. More games supported at full speed
If you plan on playing any of the latest games or DirectX 11/12 titles, then adding a dedicated GPU is a must if you want smooth gameplay. Both Dragon Age Inquisition and Rise Of The Tomb Raider run well on an RX 550 using Vulkan as opposed to DX11/12 where the performance drops below 30 FPS in most scenes due to lack of shaders found on APUs.
2. Better performance in graphics and compute applications
Even if you want to just edit some photos or videos with lightroom or premiere, the extra GPU power will come into play when rendering previews. Lightroom has a great OpenCL implementation which lets it use physical CPU cores for processing while using the GPU shaders to do all of the heavy liftings. This makes editing fun again because instead of having a slideshow speed you can actually work on your photo edits without thinking about shortening your lifespan by sheer boredom.
3. E-sport games are now viable for casual play
The latest competitive title Overwatch can now be enjoyed even with a modest CPU setup like the Ryzen 5 2400g as long as you have a graphics card that is powerful enough to keep up. The 2400g easily gets over 100 FPS average in our test scenario which is more than enough for most people who just want to enjoy it casually with their friends online. This proves true for many e-sport titles where a high framerate is key for winning your match or catching your enemy off guard.
