5 Things To Consider Before Buying The Best Gaming GPUs for 1440P 144Hz

1. First things first, do you have a 144Hz monitor?

There is no point in buying an expensive graphics card if your monitor cannot even run the games at high enough framerates to take advantage of it. Make sure that your computer can output at least 60 FPS on all of the most graphically demanding games you want to play, using the highest settings possible. If you are unsure about this, check out YouTube gameplay videos made with similar PCs and see what performance they offer (e.g., you should be able to get at least 100 FPS or more on “Battlefield 4” or “Crysis 3”). Note that some games may only be limited by your CPU instead of GPU (eg., “Starcraft 2” and “League of Legends”), so keep that in mind as well.

2. What type of monitor do you have?

– If your monitor is a TN panel, it may not be worth upgrading to an expensive GPU; the graphical improvement will be negligible for most people who play video games (the main benefit would be the ability to see more colors and thus play more types of games)

1. Better price per frame

It’s extremely hard to find a more efficient value than what you get from Gaming GPUs at 1440P 144Hz. If you want the best experience, it will run you ~$550 for an RX 480 4GB or GTX 1060 3GB (~$450-$500 if on sale). With an RX 480 4GB OC + Freesync, that puts your “price of admission” for this experience at ~$630, which is pretty steep considering some models are retailing for higher MSRP prices still. The GTX 1060 6GB is cheaper but still pretty pricey compared to high-end CPUs like the i5 8400 (~$200) or Ryzen 5 2600X (~$230). At the end of the day, you can expect to pay $650-680 for an RX 480 8GB OC + Freesync if you want the best experience. This ends up being ~$150 more than what I would consider reasonable for a CPU (~$500), but it’s worth every penny.

2. Better performance at 1080P 144Hz

If 1440P 144Hz is desirable, then it definitely makes sense to purchase a GPU that’ll give you good performance at 1080P (or even higher resolutions like 2160P). While there are some GPUs that outperform an RX 480, they’re either much less efficient or more expensive / on preorder / on sale right now (e.g., Vega 56 / 64). If someone wants to game at 1440P 144Hz, ~$150-200 more for an RX 480 8GB OC (or GTX 1060 6GB) is definitely worth the cost in my opinion.

3. Better performance at higher refresh rates

Finally, if you plan on using Freesync above 144Hz, then you’ll want to make sure your monitor can display frames in sync with your GPU. A GTX 1050 will only be able to provide < 60 FPS at 1080P when Freesync is enabled and it lacks support for adaptive synchronization tech entirely! The RX 480 8GB or GTX 1060 6GB max out around 96-120 FPS depending on the game / GPU model which ensures that there are no tears even without Vsync engaged. If you’re willing to use Vsync, then there are some more efficient options like the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti (and up) which can push 144 FPS+ at 1440P.
