Buying Guide For The Best FPV Camera

1. Video Format

This is probably the most obvious requirement for an FPV Camera since without bringing along an appropriate recording device (especially if flying with goggles) you won’t gain much from good video quality even if you do manage to get it.

2. Field of View (FOV)

Field of view is the angle of the sensor’s vision, measured horizontally or diagonally depending on your camera’s orientation. For example, if you were standing 5m away from a wall and looking at the wall with one eye rotated 45° sideways (from above), that would be an approx. horizontal FOV of 135° (90°+45°). If both eyes were then oriented perpendicularly back at the wall, this would give you an approx. diagonal FOV of 113° (90°+23°). Since FPV Cameras are meant to be mounted below your drone, most will have horizontal fields of view between 90° and 170°.

3. Frame Rate

This is how many frames per second (fps) the camera records, which directly affects image smoothness. The higher the frame rate, the smoother your video will be. Most cameras record at 30 fps or 60 fps but some go as high as 120 fps.

4. Resolution

The resolution is how many pixels the sensor captures in total and is usually given as width x height. A higher resolution gives you more detail but also requires more storage space and bandwidth for transmission. Common resolutions are 720p (1280×720), 1080p (1920×1080) and 2160p (3840×2160).

5. Price

FPV Cameras range from a few dollars to several hundred, so there’s something for everyone’s budget. Just make sure to compare the specs of the different models to find the one that best suits your needs.

3 Benefits Of FPV Camera

1. The ability to map and inspect areas that would otherwise be inaccessible for personnel or equipment

An explorer named David Livingstone was one of the first people to document the Victoria Falls in southern Africa. In his writings, he describes being able to look across the raging waters and feel “a curious sensation of terror”. Today, we can safely explore the area around the falls using a drone fitted with an FPV camera.

For example, in early 2017 a team of firefighters in California used an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to inspect the roof of a burning building. The UAV was outfitted with an FPV camera, which live-streamed footage back to the firefighters on the ground. This allowed them to make better decisions about how and where to attack the fire.

2. Increased safety and situational awareness

FPV cameras can also be used for safety and security purposes. For example, law enforcement officials can use them to monitor large events or crowds from a safe distance. Similarly, construction managers can use them to inspect job sites for safety irregularities and the quality of ongoing work.

FPV cameras serve as an excellent tool for security personnel to perform their duties without putting themselves in harm’s way. In a hostage situation, for example, law enforcement officials can use them to monitor the location and activities of criminals from a safe distance.

3. A new way to communicate with your drone

In addition to being able to see things from a whole new perspective, FPV camera technology allows you to experience these views as if they were right in front of you by providing a live feed on a screen or through goggles. This “real world” view also allows pilots to have more meaningful conversations about each flight plan with other people on the ground who have access to the same footage that the pilot is seeing. This makes the overall flight experience safer and more enjoyable for everyone involved.
