1. What is an EMF meter really measuring?
Not all EMFs are alike; different types of fields may have different effects on us. For example, electric fields (both alternating and static) can cause direct stimulation of nerves and muscles. Magnetic fields (static only) can induce electric currents in conducting bodies, causing unwanted biological effects. Finally, extremely low-frequency (ELF) fields do not cause the body to become stimulated: instead they change the voltage that is generated by our cells’ own electrical activity and can thereby affect us both physically and neurologically.
But an EMF meter cannot discriminate one type of field from another; it just reports on total electromagnetic field strength at a point in time. If you want to be able to say for sure what kind of EMF poses a risk to you, you need other kinds of equipment such as signal analyzers or meters which can measure specific frequencies, types of modulation, etc., over time.
2. Are you measuring what you think you are?
Think for a moment about the basics of electric circuits. According to Ohm’s law, the voltage in an electric circuit must remain constant, or else the current will be drawn from one part of the circuit to another until equilibrium is reached. This means that if two wires carry equal but opposite currents (one wire carries current flowing “into” the page while the other carries current flowing “out of” it), their voltages will cancel out and there will exist no net voltage between them—except maybe at very high frequencies where EMFs can appear to jump across small air gaps.
This also means that when measuring magnetic fields (which come from charges moving through wires) with an AC-powered meter, you must make sure the wires are carrying equal but opposite currents, or else you will get no reading. It is possible to make an EMF meter that measures only AC magnetic fields, but if your meter of choice doesn’t have this feature it may be measuring more than just magnetic fields and not informing you of how much of its readings are actually due to electric fields vs. magnetic fields!
Two of the most popular consumer meters on the market today, TriField Natural Living and Gaussmaster PM2300CX, are both “dual field” general-purpose models which measure both electric and magnetic fields at once. Thus they are probably not ideal for exploring ELF effects, nor do they work well with compact bulbs.
3. Is your meter reading the fields you think it is?
There are several types of electromagnetic fields, and currents can create them in different ways. A single-axis meter will only sense electric or magnetic fields that pass through its plane of sensitivity. For example, if you take our friend Gaussmaster PM2300CX and hold it along the wire of a compact fluorescent bulb (with the glass removed), it reports measurements in line with the direction of current flow but since most circuits are symmetrical, this means there are no ELF components to be measured! Electric fields around power lines are perpendicular to their wires, but when measuring them with an EMF meter held parallel to these wires one must be careful not to let the plane of measurement intercept any of the ground, neutrals, or other wires, or else the meter’s own grounding wire will short out the field you are trying to measure!
4. How does your meter handle multiple frequencies?
RF/microwave meters work best at their design frequency because that is where they have been calibrated. Most EMF meters cannot discriminate between different frequencies in an electric or magnetic field. They just report combined measurements in line with the principle axis in their plane of sensitivity. Such meters are not very useful in exploring ELF effects—and if you hold them along a power line when there is no RF being emitted by it, what are they measuring then?
5. Is your meter reporting cumulative exposures to low-intensity fields?
Just because you are not directly exposed to very strong fields doesn’t mean they are not affecting you. Not all of our biological effects of ELFs are due to currents in the body, but some definitely are! For example, if you go into a room where electric furnace heat is on then turn it off and stay there for more than about 30 minutes, your body will still be acting as if it were heated by that EMF source even though you’re no longer being “exposed” to it. This is called bioelectrical heating, and research indicates that such cumulative exposures can cause sleeping problems because they lower our natural melatonin production.
