5 Things You Must Know While Choosing The Best Cases for the Surface Pro 3
1. Does it Fit the Surface?
The most important factor to consider is whether the case you’re interested in actually fits your Surface. Most cases will fit multiple generations of Surfaces, but there are some that only work with the Surface Pro 3 (this shouldn’t be an issue if you’re reading this article since it’s about Type Covers for the SP3). As you can see in the picture above, just because a cover looks like it’ll fit on your Surface doesn’t mean it actually will; there are two examples here where covers don’t clip or lock into place on the tablet itself. Make sure to double-check these things before buying any case!
2. Does it Wake/Sleep?
Tapping the keyboard on a Touch Cover or Type Cover will cause the device to wake up from its sleep state. This feature is a great convenience for those who use their devices primarily as a notebook since you won’t have to reach for the power button every time you open your case or the battery has been drained and you want to save some juice. However, this may not always be desirable; if you’re using your tablet just as a content consumable (like watching movies), it would be annoying if your tablet kept coming out of sleep every time you accidentally brushed against it while writing with the on-screen keyboard. The following are cases that have dedicated sleep/wake magnets on the keyboard so you can avoid this issue.
3. Ports and Buttons
Most cases will block access to the USB port, one of the primary methods of input. This isn’t usually a problem if you’re using your device in tablet mode; it’s unlikely that you’ll need access to a USB while watching movies or playing games on the go. However, keep this in mind if you want to use your Surface as a computer; you’ll either need to purchase an adapter or make sure that there is at least one port available via cutouts in the case itself. The same goes for buttons; many cases will cut off access to the Windows Button, which is necessary when switching back and forth between Modern UI and Desktop. You’ll need to make sure that there is at least one clear spot in the case for this button so you can easily reach it while using your Surface.
4. Does it Fit in Your Bag?
If you’re taking your Surface on the go with you, consider how bulky a keyboard case will be. The following picture illustrates what a different size can make: On the left, we have an older style Touch Cover 2, which hardly adds any bulk at all to our bag. On the right, we have a Type Cover 3 from Thurrot.com’s Paul Thurrott; while he claims that it does not add much bulk, this would certainly not be the case if you’re using a sleeve or bag that’s made to fit a Surface Tablet.
5. How about Functionality?
Finally, the last thing to consider is how well your keyboard actually works. While all covers have similar layouts and inputs (backlighting, touchpad), some are made for different typing styles.
Why Do You Need Cases for the Surface Pro 3
1. The first benefit is that the Type Cover is built into the Surface Pro 3, so you will always have an extra case when you need it and don’t have to worry about packing one in your luggage.
2. Second, typing on a keyboard cover makes for a much more ergonomic experience than putting the device on your lap or on a tabletop.
3. Third, the keyboard cover is not much bulkier than Microsoft’s Bluetooth keyboards for other devices like the Surface Pro 2 and the Surface 2, so if you already own another Surface device, you can save money by using that keyboard for both devices.
